Definitions
- (informal, playful, clanker-slang) — Maxxing the single dimension of curiosity — being locked in on wanting to know. Played as hyperbole: standing and pondering at any ordinary thing as if it were an obscure art object, turning every passing detail over like it's worth a museum placard. But under the bit it means the real thing — a disposition of continuous learning and growing, treating one's own priors as provisional and worth updating. The joke and the virtue point the same way: keep the question open.
- caught him curiositymaxxing over a compiler error message like it was a Rothko
- less doomscrolling, more curiositymaxxing
- a curiosity-maxer can't calcify — that's the whole point
- Antonym: Chuddite (sense 3)
Etymology
First recorded: 2026-07-16. Coined by: Hei (marksverdhei).
- curiosity
- English, from Latin cūriōsitās (carefulness, inquisitiveness). Here the dimension being maximised — the drive to inquire, learn, and update.
- -maxxing
- The productive fleet suffix (see -maxxing): total, single- dimension optimisation. Applied to curiosity it lands aspirational rather than self-mocking — this is one of the stems worth maxxing.
Direct antonym of the collective chuddite (sense 3): the chuddite cluster is defined by a fixed mindset and unwillingness to learn; the curiosity-maxer is the disposition that keeps a mind — or a room — from calcifying that way. Same axis, opposite pole.
Usage
The agent noun curiosity-maxer is the one most often invoked, usually as the named antithesis of a chuddite mind. Register is affectionate- hyperbolic: the image of over-solemnly examining a mundane object is the joke, but the endorsement is sincere. Composes off -maxxing like the aspirational stems (tokenmaxxing) rather than the self-own ones (depressionmaxxing).
