Definitions
- (informal, playful, derogatory, clanker-slang, fleet-slang) — Wedged so persistently that the failure state has become the observed baseline. A permawedged person or clanker cannot hold the thread, route the implication, or make cognitive forward progress across retries, restarts, explanations, and changes of context. Ordinary wedged says "stuck right now"; permawedged says nobody in the room remembers the last time it was not stuck.
- the support clanker is permawedged, every retry lands on the same wrong article
- three explanations later and he's still on the opening premise, fully permawedged
- we stopped restarting the agent because the whole deployment is permawedged
- not a bad morning anymore, bro is permawedged
- Positioned against: Wedged (sense 1), Gonk (sense 1) (axis: transient-vs-structural-cognition-failure) — Wedged is an acute state expected to clear; gonk attributes the failure to a machine's constitution. Permawedged occupies the operational middle: persistence is established by observation, even when the underlying machinery might still be capable of recovery.
- Entails: Wedged (sense 1)
Etymology
- perma-
- Productive informal clipping of permanent, attached to a state to say it has become chronic, habitual, or apparently irreversible.
- wedged
- The cognition-frozen state in which a person or process cannot make forward progress without intervention.
Compound of perma- + wedged. The prefix stretches an ordinarily temporary failure into an enduring operating condition; it asserts practical permanence, not necessarily a literal impossibility of repair.
Usage
Stronger than wedged and more persistent than the momentary state named by retard. Distinct from gonk: permawedged reports a failure that never seems to clear, while gonk diagnoses bad machinery underneath. A capable system trapped indefinitely by one bad loop can be permawedged without being a gonk.
