- (general) — (verb) To shrink or recoil in embarrassment, discomfort, or fear; to visibly wince away from something. The literal sense the slang was compressed out of.

Etymology
- crengen
- Middle English, from Old English cringan — to bend, yield, fall in battle. Original sense: to physically shrink or cower away from something.
The slang shift is a compression: "that makes me cringe" collapsed into "that is cringe", promoting the verb-response into a standalone adjective. Popularised through Reddit's /r/cringe (from 2010) and gaming/streaming culture; settled by the mid-2010s as the standard dismissive verdict against based.
Usage
Opposite of based. A take is cringe when the speaker clearly wanted approval and the audience recoiled; a take is based when the speaker didn't ask for approval and got it anyway.
