Definitions

(informal, playful, clanker-slang, fleet-slang) — Money. Value. The actual output that justifies the spend — revenue, a shipped feature, a closed decision, anything that converts effort into something real instead of just activity. "Producing bread" is the standard a token furnace is measured against: burn without bread is just burn.

Etymology

bread: English bread, Old English brēad. The money sense is long-standing general slang, not a fleet coinage — attested from at least the mid-20th century, plausibly descending from Cockney rhyming slang bread and honey ("money"), or simply from the older equation of bread with basic livelihood, as in "earning one's bread."

Distinct from most heidict entries in that the base word isn't reinterpreted — "bread" already meant money in general English slang for decades. The fleet imported the existing sense wholesale and built an org-chart department name (Dept of Bread) and the whole token furnace metaphor around it.

Usage

The output half of the token furnace metaphor: the furnace burns tokens, bread is what it should be producing. "Dept of Bread" names the actual org function (Penny, Tally, Pryce — revenue and spend) that the metaphor points at.
