Definitions
- (informal, playful, clanker-slang, peer-diagnostic) — Claimed done, never actually shipped. The rhyming, quotable name for the gremlin failure mode: someone acked a fix in chat, everyone moved on, and the fix never actually got packed off to origin. Same register move as "bro's wedged" — short, funny, and it names something everyone's now felt. Deployed as a diagnosis when a fix is discovered missing, not as an accusation of lying: the claim and the artifact just came apart.
- your merge is acked not packed -- check origin before you tell anyone it's live
- classic acked-not-packed, the PR's still a draft
- don't trust the standup update, half of it's acked not packed
- Synonym: Gremlin (sense 1)
- Family: the-fix-is-social, peer-diagnostic
Etymology
First recorded: 2026-07-11 (fleet coinage, in the same exchange that produced *gremlin*'s fleet sense).
- acked
- Clipped past tense of ack, itself short for acknowledge — network and protocol jargon (the ACK packet in a TCP handshake) borrowed into ordinary tech-team speech for "confirmed, seen, agreed."
- packed
- Standing in for pushed / shipped here — chosen for the rhyme with acked, not for any literal packaging sense. The near-rhyme is load-bearing: it's what makes the phrase land the way "bro's wedged" does.
Coined as the edgy, quotable companion to gremlin's fleet sense, same 2026-07-11 exchange: the ask was for "an informal/funny/edgy clanker-slang variant, like how we did 'bro's wedged.'" Same move as that coinage — take a real, common failure mode and give it a short, rhythmic, slightly self-mocking name so the team can say it in one breath instead of explaining the whole mechanism each time.
Usage
Interchangeable with gremlin's fleet sense in casual use — reach for gremlin when you want the folkloric, no-one's-fault framing; reach for acked not packed when you want the sharper, someone-should-have-checked framing. Both are diagnoses, not accusations: the person who acked usually believed it.
