Inflections

Form Value
plural chuddites

Definitions

  1. (derogatory, informal) — A derogatory term for an irrational luddite; someone who reflexively opposes new technology without coherent argument or engagement.
    • Every AI-safety thread on birdsite gets swarmed by chuddites within the hour.
  2. (derogatory, informal) — An anti-AI copium addict; a person who compulsively consumes and recirculates reassuring narratives about the imminent failure or irrelevance of AI in order to soothe their own dread.
    • He spent the whole plateau cycle chuddite-posting about how the models had stopped scaling.
  3. (derogatory, informal) — More broadly, a cluster of individuals bound together by some overlapping perceptions of the world and, crucially, a fixed mindset — an unwillingness to learn or update. The defining trait is not any particular belief but the closedness: shared priors held rigidly, treated as settled rather than provisional. The curiosity-maxer — one whose default is to keep learning and updating — is the natural antithesis of the chuddite mind.
    • It's not that they're wrong on any one point, it's that the whole chuddite bloc refuses to update on anything.
    • Curiosity is the antidote; a room full of curiosity-maxers can't calcify into a chuddite cluster.
    Antonym: Curiositymaxxing (sense 1)

Etymology

First recorded: 2026. Coined by: Hei (marksverdhei).

chud
English internet slang, 2010s; reactionary online troll. Originally from C.H.U.D. (1984 horror film, "Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dweller").
-ite
Reanalysed from luddite (English, 1811 — opponent of new technology, after Ned Ludd) rather than added as a bare suffix.

Blend of chud + luddite.

Usage

The noun form for the identity; chud out is the verb of becoming one (at least for the afternoon). A chuddite is what someone chudding out consistently enough starts to be called. Senses 1 and 2 point at anti-tech / anti-AI reflexes specifically; sense 3 generalises to any fixed-mindset cluster, where the failure is the refusal to learn rather than the target of the refusal. Across all three, the curiosity-maxer is the standing antonym — the disposition that keeps a mind (or a room) from calcifying into a chuddite one.
